Ask anyone who has actually stood on Uhuru Peak how hard Kilimanjaro is, and you’ll usually get a version of the same paradox: the walking itself isn’t technical, and the mountain is genuinely one of the most punishing things they’ve ever done. What matters more than any single number in that ladder is the shape of it: altitude gained, altitude given back, altitude gained again — the “climb high, sleep low” pattern that gives your body repeated, deliberate exposure to thinner air without asking it to sleep at the hardest altitude every single night. The UIAA’s own prevention guidance is specific about the pace this should follow: above 2,500–3,000m, the next night’s sleeping altitude shouldn’t climb more than 300–500m above the previous one, with two nights at the same altitude built in after every two to four days of ascent.
